The Canton Park Redevelopment Committee was established by the City of Winter Park’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) on November 10, 2003. Members of the committee included various community residents, civic, and business leaders. The Canton Park Redevelopment Committee met numerous times to discuss how the Community Land Trust (CLT) would be structured and governed.
The CLT concept was researched and introduced to citizens who had a genuine concern about the displacement of the historical African American resident of the Westside of Winter Park.
Realizing a few residents were descendants from the original incorporators of the City of Winter Park who pioneered the community of Hannibal Square, resulted in the formation of the Hannibal Square Community Land Trust (HSCLT) as a means to preserve that legacy. Emerging from the development of a housing strategy were ten city lots deeded to the HSCLT which provided affordable housing for ten (10) families.
